Anxiety and high blood pressure are sometimes said to be linked to each other. This happens because if a person is suffering anxiety for a longer period of time he may also develop high blood pressure. Can anxiety cause high blood pressure? Perhaps yes if it persists for long and no medicine has been taken.
Scientists have found that if a person becomes anxious or is under great stress than his blood pressure may rise to a certain extent. This is because our body produces vasoconstricting hormones that increase blood pressure. But once the situation is resolved the blood pressure may return to normalcy. But if the problems persist for a considerable longer period of time then the problem may aggravate further and the person may develop high blood pressure or hypertension.
Relation of Anxiety and High Blood Pressure
Though anxiety has not been known to cause high blood pressure but it can create problems due to repeated elevations in blood pressure. It can also cause dramatic and temporary spikes in blood pressure. But if this happens on a regular basis, then it can damage your blood vessels, heart and kidney diseases and thereby cause chronic rise in blood pressure. But the worst thing is that anxiety accompanied by high blood pressure may lead you to develop other bad habits like smoking, alcohol addiction.
How to Reduce Anxiety
Medications are available to save you from anxiety disorders. Some medication like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) which are taken to treat anxiety may also increase your blood pressure. So the best thing possible is to talk to your doctor if you are suffering from any kind of anxiety disorder. You can also resort to yoga and meditation. Talking to someone about your problems can also help you feel relaxed and calm and thus you are able to control the situation better.
