The human body is a complex aggregation of various organs and body parts. It is quite amazing as to how the body functions like a well oiled machine and that too, for years on end.
The lower back region is one such important body part that plays a significant role in the general well being of the body.
Pain is one of the symptoms that indicate discomfort in the body. It is a sign that not all is well with the body. Naturally, pain also indicates that one must take care and corrective action to prevent acute problem.
The lower back supports not only the whole of the back, but also the posterior portion of the body. It also acts as a connector between the upper and lower regions of the body. It is quite important we understand about the structure of the lower back and the reasons why there could be instances of pain in the lower back.
The lower back consists of the lumbar vertebrae and the discs that compose it. At also consists of muscles and ligaments that hold the muscles and internal organs in place, which in turn are covered by the skin in this region. Hence, the lower back region is quite complex in nature and significant in its contribution to the overall support of the human body.
Causes of Pain in Lower Back
There could be various causes of pain in the lower back region. Some of these causes are mentioned below:
- Overuse: sometimes the lower back could suffer harm due to overuse. This is especially true of athletes or weight lifters who may inadvertently over exert themselves in the lower back region. Persons carrying heavy weights suddenly, without being used to doing the same, may also suffer a similar effect.
- Pregnancy: this is one of the most common causes of lower back pain. The weight of expectant mothers increases due to the pregnancy and this may lead to greater and heavier weight on the lower back, resulting in symptoms of pain and discomfort.
- Posture: The modern age finds many people cooped for long hours staring at a computer screen. This is essentially a sedentary lifestyle which, coupled with seating arrangements that are not ergonomic could have deleterious effects on the lower spinal region and hence cause back pain. This is aggravated if one does not take care to stretch once in a while or do simple exercises to break the monotony of wrong posture.
- Slipped Disc: the vertebral column contains discs which are made up of cartilage. These discs also have lubricating fluids. A slipped disc occurs when there is a rupture in the disc leading to the fluid flowing out. This generally occurs among persons of advanced age or those whose disc may be ruptured due to overuse or misuse. In any case, slipped discs cause lots of pain and need to be cared properly.
The causes of back pain could be many. However, one has to be careful to ensure that the symptoms of lower back pain are recognized and corrected at short notice so that any acute and debilitating problems may be effectively prevented.
