What Are the Symptoms and Causes of UTI

Female Urinary Tract Infection can occur in females of any age and almost half of the women are prone to get it once in their lifetime. It is caused by the bacteria which may enter the bladder and cause infection. Proper cleanliness is the keyword here. Women need to know what are the symptoms and causes of UTI to get it treated.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is painful though not a deadly disease which occurs in women. Almost 50% of the women may suffer from it at least once in their lifetime, while a few may have to bear the infection throughout their life. It is caused by the bacteria which invade the urinary tract and keep on getting multiplied. Though UTI is not serious but it can be painful and problematic for the women who suffer from it. Since women have a shorter urinary tract so they are more susceptible to getting UTI than men.

Cause of Urinary Tract Infection

UTI is primarily caused by the bacteria from the bowel which lives on the skin near the vagina and may enter the urinary tract through the urethra. These bacteria thereon may move upwards and cause serious infection in the urinary bladder and sometimes in the kidney as well. Yet another cause of UTI is sexual intercourse. Female sometimes are prone to get UTI during sexual intercourse because the bacteria in the vagina may sometimes be forced into the urethra. Women who have more than one sexual partner have even a greater chance of suffering from urinary tract infection than those who have just one single partner. Though it is not common but some women may get the infection every time they have sex.

At times, UTI is also caused when you wait for long to urinate since the bladder may stretch beyond its capacity and with time the bladder muscles tend to weaken up. It may also happen because of pregnancy, kidney stones and diabetes.

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection

The symptoms of UTI may differ from one female to another depending upon the age and location of the infection. But mostly there is burning sensation and pain while urinating. The urge to urinate increase which is followed by abnormally coloured urine, there may be a foul smell and blood in urine. The women may even suffer from chills, nausea, vomiting and mild fever. There may be abdominal pain and fatigue.

Treatment of Urinary Tract Infection

Once any of the above mentioned symptoms appears, it is important to consult a doctor before the situation aggravates. The doctor may order for a urine culture or pelvic examination to know about the infection. A full course of antibiotics is also given.

In order to prevent the infection from occurring again it is important to drink plenty of water, cranberry juice is also found effective, urinate when there is a need, maintain proper hygiene, clean the genital area before and after sex, wipe the urinary region with a soft cloth.
