Asthma can occur in people of all age groups. In order to cure asthma, a complete asthma treatment programme is to be followed; the patient should always keep the inhaler at hand and must regularly consult the doctor. It is important to keep a check on the asthma so as to prevent it from becoming acute.
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways thereby causing difficulty in breathing.
It affects people of all ages including small children. Although asthma is incurable; it can only be controlled through applying various medicines as well as preventive techniques.
Asthma basically occurs when the airways (tubes which take air in and out of the lungs) get inflamed with mucous thus making it difficult breathe naturally. It can be caused due to genetic and hereditary factors, large scale air pollution or allergies to various food additives or animal furs.
Doctors follow a two point approach in the treatment of asthma-
Long Term-In this option medicine is given to control the inflammation of airways. These medicines are to be taken up on a daily basis.
Quick Relief- Medicine is given to provide relief from asthma and prevent it from becoming acute.
Long term medicines consists of the following-
Inhaled Corticosteroids: These medicines are considered to be the most effective in reducing the swelling of the airways and help in treating asthma to longer extent. They are generally found to be safe and are most often prescribed by the doctors. But on the negative front, if they are taken continuously for many years they may lead to cataract and osteoporosis. Apart from this, there are some other long term medicines like Inhaled long acting beta2 agonists and
Theophylline which are helpful in opening the airways.
Cromolyn and Nedocromil: They help to prevent inflammation and are used as inhalers.
Quick relief medicines include the following- inhaled short acting beta2 agonists are the most preferred since they help in opening up airways quickly so that air easily passes through them and thus the patient can breathe easily. Quick relief inhaler is yet another effective medicine. In fact people with asthma symptoms should always keep it with themselves in order to prevent it from flaring up at any point of time.
Medicines alone cannot provide relief in case of asthma. Making changes in environment at home so another important aspect to prevent asthma attack. Proper hygiene is most important. Try to keep the house as well as surroundings clean from dirt or insects. Clean the house once a week by wearing mask. Pets are to be avoided inside the house at all costs, try to wash the mattresses, pillows, curtains in hot water, avoid putting carpet on floors.
