Lyme Disease Bacteria
Lyme: The Next Generation Bacterial Disease
Considered one of the major public health problems in the specific region of the United States, Lyme disease remains problematic medical issue even to this day. This tick-borne illness is still prevalent in the United States which definitely needs some serious heeding that can reassure prevention of further spreading and remarkable control.
Commonest of the tick-borne bacterial diseases in Northern Hemisphere, the United States, Lyme disease has already gripped the entire region. Transmission of borrelia into humans through biting of infected ticks by the genus Ixodes species cause this typical disease. Fever, headache, fatigue, depression and unusual skin rashes called erythema migrans are the early symptoms of Lyme disease. If treatment is not done on the right moment many other related symptoms like problems in joints, heart and central nervous system may occur that become more severe and extremely difficult to treat.
Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease that Allen Steere investigated in 1978 but this fact remained unrevealed until 1982 when Willy Burgdorfer identified B. burgdorferi.
First recognised by Dr. Allen Steere in 1975 Lyme disease was investigated in the United States soon after the outbreak of mysterious juvenile rheumatoid arthritis near Lyme village in the Connecticut region. It was presumed then that this disease used to transmit through arthropod vector. It got named after the rural area, Lyme where most such cases had been witnessed then. The problem with Lyme disease till now is that it is responsible for various unexplained symptoms that haven’t been identified yet.
Research groups and medical experts including Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Academy of Neurology opine that existing scientific evidences available before us don’t support the role played by borrelia. Ironically antibiotic treatment done too doesn’t have satisfactory result.
Treatments Procedure
A major treatment option available for Lyme disease is antibiotics. Treatment procedure entirely depends upon suitable antibiotics prescribed and the particular stage at which this disease reaches. Doxycycline antibiotics are given to adults whereas amoxicillin are exclusive for children. In the cases of pregnant women suffering from Lyme disease erythromycin antibiotics are often prescrbed besides ceftriaxone. Usually whole treatment course goes takes 14 to 21 days.
Other Medicinal Options
Cefuroxime and cefotaxime are other preferred medicines. This infection may become highly complicate and may not treated easily if symptoms are not investigated on right time and the disease is left untreated. It is at this juncture that bacteria keep disseminating in the whole body and pass through blood-brain barrier stage.
Further Discoveries
Willy Burgdorfer discovered the etiologic agent of Lyme disease in 1982. This discovery is still considered another breakthrough in this regard. Although it was a major investigation but no further progress has been seen yet in the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease which keep increasing with each passing of days.
