What Are the Symptoms and Treatment of Stomach Ulcer

Does stomach ulcer is regularly bothering you and you are afraid that it might result to some complications in your body? Stomach ulcer should not be ignored and immediate attention is needed to prevent this disorder to create further complications, in relation to this, here is a guide to learn the symptoms of stomach ulcer and its treatment as well.

Defining Stomach Ulcer

Stomach ulcer, or also known in medical terms as “gastric ulcer”, is a type of peptic ulcer that occurs in the area of the stomach (as its name suggests) due to increased acidity that damages the lining of the stomach or can also be caused by a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). In most cases, stomach ulcer is mistakenly linked to duodenal ulcer, another type of peptic ulcer that affects the duodenum (the upper region of the small intestine). In fact, stomach ulcer is just next to duodenal ulcer which is the most common type; this is the reason why most people thought that these disorders are the same. Medical studies indicate that one of the main causes of stomach ulcer is the stomach acids, once the acids irritates the soft linings of the stomach, it will create a bad sore which is known as ulcer. And also, if the body is being exposed excessively to anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin, it can also contribute for the ulcer to take place.

Symptoms of Stomach Ulcer

To understand perfectly this unwanted disorder, knowing its symptoms is very crucial. We usually feel a discomfort or uneasiness on the area of the stomach, including abdominal pain. There are also cases that “heartburn” (burning sensation felt in the lower chest) will arise after eating which usually last for couple of hours or more. Or there will be a situation that you can’t feel the pain after eating, but it appears in the middle of your sleep or early in the morning when you wake up. Other symptoms of stomach ulcers are vomiting, distress in the upper stomach or nausea, a gradual loss in weight and appetite.

Moreover, there are more severe symptoms other than those mild signs. There are rare cases that the patient may see blood on their stools (human feces) as well as when they vomit. Once these symptoms are seen on the patient with stomach ulcer, this requires an immediate attention of a doctor to check if the disorder is causing other complications.

Stomach Ulcer Treatment

  • Use of Antibiotics

If the cause of the disorder is the bacteria H. pylori, this can be killed using antibiotics. There are several kinds of antibiotics used to treat stomach ulcer caused by bacteria and they are; Amoxicillin, Metronidazole, Clarithromycin, and Tetracycline. However, before using these medications the patient should follow the prescription of the doctor for the right dosages.

  • Use of Proton Pump inhibitors and H2-receptor antagonists

These medications are used if the cause of the ulcer is stomach acids.

  • Surgery

This option is very uncommon in treating stomach ulcers, not unless if the doctor sees other complications caused by the disorder.
