What are the Symptoms and Causes of Bladder Infection
Symptoms of bladder infection in women are difficult to be understood in the initial stage. Women must immediately consult a doctor before the infection affects other organs of the body. It is important to know what are the symptoms and causes of bladder infection so that it can be treated at the right time.
Bladder infection can assume serious proportions and must therefore not be overlooked. It occurs mostly in women than men. Bladder infection is commonly called as Urinary Tract Infection or Cystitis. Bladder infection is primarily caused because of the bacteria E.Coli. The infection occurs when the bacteria from the vaginal area moves towards the urethra. There are various other bacteria’s which too may be responsible for the bladder infection like- Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, and Proteus species.
Since women have a short urethra so they are more prone to get bladder infection than men. Sometimes the bacteria may also make its way to the vagina and anus and lead to infection.
Symptoms of Bladder Infection
There are a number of symptoms which may arise like the need to urinate frequently. This symptom is called as dysuria. This may happen in several times in a day. The urine may also contain pus and blood. There may also be a burning and painful sensation in the urine. Fever, nausea and vomiting may also be seen among some of the women. There may be cloudy urine or smell in the urine. The patient may feel sudden discomfort. There may be cases where cysititis produces no such symptoms even or the symptoms disappear suddenly after a few days. If this occurs it is necessary to go for medical checkups. Major pain may occur in the pubic bone and lower abdomen. The urge develops to urinate frequently at night. The urine may also be reddish in colour.
Women suffering from bladder infection may also have pain in the lower abdomen. Women may also suffer from fatigue and depression accompanied by mild shakiness and chills. UTI may also occur among infants who may have vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and lack of appetite. But in elderly people there may be lethargy, poor appetite and mild fever.
Sometimes the symptoms of bladder infection can be interpreted as just another symptom in case of elderly people. They may often overlook the symptoms and this makes diagnosis all the more difficult. So it is important to get regular medical checkups to get treated for the bladder infections.
Factors Responsible for Bladder Infection
Main reason is the short length of urethra and its proximity to vagina and anus which makes it easy for the bacteria to move around. Sexual intercourse with multiple partners is also a cause. Pregnant women too can get the infection. The doctors may ask for urine culture to find out how much the infection has spread.
