What Causes Blepharitis

Causes of Blepharitis

Blepharitis is an irritation and inflammation of the eyelids. There are various causes of the inflammation such as allergy and infection. However, it is important to understand deeply what causes blepharitis in order to avoid the triggers.

Causes of blepharitis vary depending on its location whether anterior or posterior. Generally, blepharitis is commonly caused by the following conditions:

  • Increased flaking of skin cells near the eyelid area can cause allergic blepharitis.
  • Exposure to the irritants in the atmosphere can also cause allergic blepharitis. Likewise, medications systemic or ocular can also result to eyelid inflammation. In some cases, exposure to pets such as cat and dog can also cause the inflammation.
  • Bacterial infection would result to anterior blepharitis. It is caused by the bacteria staphylococci and the infection is called staphylococcal blepharitis.
  • When the infection affects the Meibomian glands there is a great possibility to experience posterior blepharitis.
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis is another condition that would result to inflammation of eyelid.

It is not enough to know the causes of blepharitis because it is equally important to know the symptoms. The common symptoms that a person would feel include irritation, itching, burning and uncomfortable sensation. In worse cases the lids appear red and have ulcerative areas that would bleed. On the other hand, the tear film does not affect the vision as the person can see normally. In some cases, affected person may experience fluctuating vision especially in the advanced cases.

Once you notice the symptoms you should immediately seek medical intervention from your ophthalmologist or physician. In this way you can ensure that the inflammation would not get worse. Likewise, it is about time to call your ophthalmologist if you feel eye pain, change in vision and persisting symptoms you should immediately rush to the hospital. Immediate treatment is necessary before the condition gets worse.

The eyelid inflammation is very easy to treat as long as it is done earlier. In this sense, the first thing to do is to observe good eyelid hygiene. The prescription medicine would not be effective without following the eyelid hygiene. On the other hand, if you are using contact lenses you should replace it frequently. Otherwise, the lens deposits would lead to blepharitis. If the symptoms become severe it is recommended to discontinue using the contact lens.

In addition, reducing the use of eye makeup can also help in treating eyelid inflammation. If you are using anti-dandruff shampoo make sure that it would not get in contact with your eyes otherwise it would add to the irritation. In case that such infection often affects your eyelid you should take nutritional supplement that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. It helps in improving the function of the eyelid’s glands.
