Dysmenorrhea is a condition affecting women during the time of menstruation. It is a serious gynaecological problem which affects women. It is basically characterised by serious pain in the lowest part of the abdomen.
Dysmenorrhea basically starts a few days before the start of the menstruation in women and it is known to lessen down after 2 or 3 days. There is no specific cause of Dysmenorrhea. It is quite a common problem among women and around 40% American women are known to suffer from the same. However the intensity of the pain varies. While there are a few women who might suffer from extreme pain there are others who might suffer from lesser pain.

Dysmenorrhea is basically of two types- the primary and the secondary. Primary Dysmenorrhea is known to occur among young women, after the onset of menarche while Secondary Dysmenorrhea occurs after the menarche.
Women who might suffer from Dysmenorrhea- it depends upon a number of factors like obesity, those women who smoke, women having a higher level of stress. Women who have a family history of Dysmenorrhea too are known to suffer from the same.

Symptoms of Dysmenorrhea

The woman might suffer from pain in the lower abdomen, nausea, vomiting are some other symptoms. You might also suffer from fatigue, lethargy as well as depression during this time frame.

Dysmenorrhea or menstrual cramps are primarily caused by the contraction of the uterus during menstruation periods. When the uterus contracts strongly during periods, it can affect the nearby blood vessels. This leads to the stoppage of oxygen supply to the uterus and thereby the pain becomes severe.

Relieving the menstrual cramps or Dysmenorrhea

There are various ways by which the menstrual cramps can be lessened. Women who suffer from Dysmenorrhea at first need to consult a good gynaecologist and tell her about the condition. It is likely that she will be giving you the medicines which will reduce the pain.

There are various medicines available like aspirin or ibuprofen which acts as a good pain reliever. Non steroidal drugs too are known to reduce the pain effectively. These drugs you can start taking at least 1 or 2 days before the period starts. In order to lessen the pain you can also keep hot towel or hot water bottle on the back of your abdomen, where you are having the pain.

You need to take proper rest and care during the periods. You need to exercise regularly. Avoiding smoking and caffeine too might be helpful to you.
