Yeast infection in women can occur at any time, a large majority suffer from it at least once in their life. It is therefore needed to take precautions with regard to diet and hygiene to prevent it from occurring. The women should know how they can get yeast infection and how it can be cured.

Women are prone to get yeast infection or vaginal yeast which occurs when there is an imbalance of vagina’s acid and base elements. Technically yeast is called ‘candida’ or ‘monilia’. The monilia fungus is naturally found inside the vagina in small numbers but its overgrowth may lead to the infection.

Symptoms of Yeast Infection

The basic symptom is the extreme itchiness in and around the vagina. There may occur extreme pain, swelling, redness and burning sensation may also occur. The pain may also occur during sex and at the time of passing urine. Rashes may also appear on the vagina and vulva, there may also be thick and white vaginal discharge which though may not be foul to smell.
Whenever the symptoms of yeast infection are found, it is very much important to consult the doctor as some of the symptoms are quite similar to other sexually transmitted diseases so take the help of doctor to understand what the real problem is.

Factors Responsible for Yeast Infection

Yeast infections are very common in women and almost 75% of the women may suffer from it at one point of their lives. There may be a few women who can get yeast infection frequently may be 3-4 times. There are a number of factors responsible. It may occur because of stress, weather changes, hormonal changes, birth control pills, high intake of sugar, carbohydrates, or caffeine. Lack of sleep and improper eating habits too are responsible for the same. Sometimes over usage of any antibiotic or steroids may also lead to the growth of this fungus. Poorly controlled diseases like diabetes may lead to such infection.

The worst thing about yeast infection is that it increases the chances of getting HIV because the virus may easily pass into the bloodstream. So the women who are suffering from yeast infection for a longer period of time may get tested for HIV.

Treatment of Yeast Infection

The doctor will examine the pelvic region to know how much the area has swollen up. He may even take a fluid sample from the vagina to understand how much severe the infection has become. The yeast infection can also be cured with the help of various creams, tablets and ointments which may be put inside the vagina. But it is important that before using any of these you should consult your doctor. You should also tell your doctor if you are pregnant or keep getting yeast infections frequently.

Avoiding Yeast Infection

Hygiene is the most important thing. You should also avoid wearing tight fitting clothes, prefer cotton clothes, change wet clothes as quickly as possible, and avoid douches, scents and hot tubs.
